Healthy Student Living With No Money No Time

Are you trying to stay healthy but struggling at every turn? Charlotte Lloyd explores an easy way to keep you on the right track with minimum spend but maximum support.

We know the struggle all too well of wanting to maintain a healthy balanced diet but finding it increasingly difficult with Uni schedule and social life overriding this desire. The thought of healthy eating is something that consumes a lot of us but we all know the guilty feeling when we opt for that takeaway meal or those chicken tenders sitting in the freeze. However, a UON initiative is here to save you from this guilt and keep you on the right track for a healthier lifestyle.

No Money No Time does not rely on expensive ingredients or fad diets, like most would think, instead this initiative has a team of qualified researchers, professors, doctors, and students who all specialise in different aspects of nutrition and dietetics.

Professor Clare Collins who fronts this initiative is a Director in the School of Health Sciences and a Deputy Director of Priority Research on Physical Activity and Nutrition at the University of Newcastle (UON). She has followed a career as a nutrition commentator, has interviewed for radio, print, blogs, and TV, and is a regular guest of Dr. Karl on ABC, Triple J Science Hour, and many more. As well as this she has written over 70 articles on The Conversation as well as 8 million readers. This experience and knowledge behind her are what leads the team and her colleagues in helping young students maintain healthy eating in the right way.

No Money No Time it is simple. On the website, there is a healthy eating quiz and this will, from the results, tailor what recipes would suit you and how this will improve your eating habits. This will come out as an easy-to-understand diet score and these results will be stored in your personal dashboard. This means you can keep track of your progress. The benefits of No Money No Time are that you receive free weekly recipes and diet tips, you can save and track progress, sign-up is free and the information provided is from professionals from Professor Collins and the full team.

What makes No Money, No Time so user-friendly is the hacks, myths and FAQS, where the team have easy cooking and nutrition tips and the debunking of long-standing myths surround diets and food.

“What you eat or don’t eat affects how you look, feel, and perform. You might want to eat better, but when you only have the basic equipment, funds are tight and your life is busy, it can be really hard.” – No Money No Time, website

But why is healthy eating so important?

Healthy eating doesn’t necessarily mean jumping from one diet to the next until you find the best one. It means being cautious about your eating, while at the same time, enjoying indulgences and knowing this will be a plan you can stick out for the long run.

Covering the 5 main food groups is one of the best ways to do this.

  1. Vegetables and legumes/beans
  2. Fruit
  3. Lean meats and poultry, fish, eggs, tofu, nuts, and seeds, legumes/beans
  4. Grain (cereal) foods, mostly wholegrain and/or high cereal fibre varieties
  5. Milk, yoghurt, cheese, and/or alternatives, mostly reduced fat.

The healthy eating quiz (HEQ) is not individual to No Money No Time, but is a reference point created in 2012 by the Dietitian Association of Australia. From this, quiz-takers receive personalised feedback of their habits and the quality of this with suggestions to boost this, and this is where No Money No Time comes in.

So what are you waiting for?

Some of the hardest things are sometimes the simplest. For a lot of young people, eating healthy and doing this consciously often gets pushed to the wayside. But with No Money No Time giving you expert advice with easy-to-follow recipes you’re sure to ace the next exam, filled with all the nutrients needed for a healthy lifestyle.
