Funky Fresh Tunes for Spring

Lucy Egan turns up the volume on some new beats to get you set for Spring

Now, I don’t profess to be any kind of musical expert or am suggesting that this playlist will be a cure-all for everyone who listens to it. But sometimes it can be nice to have something new to listen to; for your at-home workout, study music (if you’re like me and Lo-Fi beats don’t do it for you) or on your lil daily neighbourhood walk.

Hope you’re doing okay in lockdown and this selection of songs gets you hyped for all the best things about Spring: long evenings, warm weather, flowers blooming and hanging out with mates.

Here’s the playlist on YouTube, or you can also listen to it on Spotify:

Five Aussie songs to get your teeth into (in no particular order):

1. “Dribble” Sycco

This song has a bubblegum sweet sound that will get stuck between your teeth and in your head. Sung by Brisbane singer-songwriter and producer, Sasha McLeod. It’s not hard to see why she was nominated for Triple J Unearthed Artist of the year in 2020. Her EP “Sycco’s First EP” is out now.

2. “Sending Me Your Loving” The Jungle Giants

This song has some fun clubby beats (one can dream, right?) and groovy lyrics, perfect for a socially appropriate lounge-room dance party. Whilst this single was released in 2020, The Jungle Giants fourth album “Love Signs” was released in July.

3. “Grand Ideas” Alice Skye

With some relatable lyrics for this Covid time and soaring vocals, Weregaia woman, Alice Skye blazes onto the Aussie music scene with her second album, “I Feel Good but I Don’t Feel Better.” This album has some lovely sweet, slow songs that feel like soft rain on your face.

4. “Don’t Need You” Genesis Osuwu

If you need a bop and a break-up song this song has it all. This may be selling it short because it’s a straight banger but if you need an upbeat diss track this may be it. This song is part of the Ghanian-Australian’s recently released album “Missing Molars”.

5. “Just Talking” Polish Club

Hot off the press is Polish Club’s latest album, “Now We’re Cookin”; this indie rock track is full of great guitar riffs and punchy lyrics. Listen to it to pump yourself up and keep your spirits up.

International Newbies

1. “Solar Power” Lorde

I can’t not open with this song, love it or hate it. This song, coupled with the album art, conjures up days at the beach, laughing with friends, getting bad tans and maybe a cheeky couple of coldies. If Lorde can have a hot girl summer, than hopefully we can too.

2. “Happier than Ever” Billie Eilish

Again, another no-brainer to the list. Off her sophomore (and titular) album, “Happier than Ever” this soft hard-hitter is good to soak up through headphones. The pared-back sound paired with Eilish’s voice is good for any kind of emo moment you might be going through.

3. “Amoeba” Clairo

Clairo’s much anticipated second album “Sling” was released in July. This song with her trademark vocals and indie sound is proving to be a favourite on Tiktok; it’s easy to see why. Check out “Sling” for a treat and the cute album art.

4. “T r a n s p a r e n t s o u l” WILLOW feat. Travis Barker

WILLOW’s foray into pop-punk has played out well for her; she was nervous about releasing this song but it has been received well- with Blink 182’s Travis Barker on drums, great lyrics and WILLOW’s style, this song is a must-listen for anyone who needs to have a loud sing/yell (I won’t judge). Check it out on her latest album, “lately I feel EVERYTHING”.

5. “WUSYANAME” Tyler the Creator feat. YoungBoy Never Broke Again, Ty Dolla Sign

This song has smooth vocals paired with signature Tyler the Creator humour. With news that Tyler the Creator is planning to tour Australia in 2022, what more reasons do you need? Run, don’t walk. This song is part of his latest album, “CALL ME IF YOU GET LOST”.
