Last Days to Apply for Semester Exchange 2023

Have you thought about applying for an overseas exchange opportunity but are not sure where to start? Gemma Hawkins shares her experience of applying for a semester exchange and answers some FAQs.
Due to my original semester exchange plans being canceled (thanks COVID!), I’m currently in the process of planning a semester exchange for the second time, meaning I am doubly familiar with the application process. Despite my initial disappointment when the first trip was canceled, it has allowed me extra time to save up and prepare for international travel post-covid.
Studying abroad may sound daunting but don’t let that hold you back from broadening your horizons. I still remember the adrenaline rush after submitting my first application, with thoughts such as “What have I got myself into?” “How will I ever afford this?” and “Can I start packing now?” consuming my brain. Planning a semester exchange requires a lot of organisation and dedication but the pay-off will be worth it. At the University of Newcastle, we are lucky to have an amazing team of Global Experience Officers who will help you during any stage of your experience.
Firstly, what is a semester exchange?
A semester exchange is when a student travels abroad to study at a different university, while receiving recognition or credit from their home university. It is a great way for students to build international connections, experience a different culture, and expand employment opportunities all while studying! The opportunity for an international study experience is open to all students from most discipline areas.
Where can I go?
The opportunities are endless! The University has over 100 partner institutions from over 25 countries across the globe. The Global Experience Portal has a lot of resources for when you are first exploring your options.
How will I afford it?
There are a variety of financial assistance schemes available for students undertaking a semester exchange. From scholarships to grants, government loans and Centrelink payments, there are several ways to fund a semester exchange.
