Behind the Business: Callaghan Campus Pharmacy

Are you aware of the wide variety of services offered by the on-campus pharmacy? Gemma Hawkins finds out more.

From having scripts delivered to price matching other pharmacies, Callaghan Campus Pharmacy does it all. Pharmacist and owner, Stuart, has extensive experience in the industry, both in Australia and the UK. Stuart graduated from the University of Sydney and has worked in pharmacies all around Australia, including a couple of ski seasons as the Thredbo pharmacist. After working in England for nearly 10 years, Stuart was looking for an exciting new project upon returning to Australia. He saw a call out for retailers at the University of Newcastle and so began the Callaghan Campus Pharmacy.

The Callaghan Campus Pharmacy, launched in 2013, offers unique services to complement campus life. Open 9 am-5 pm Monday to Friday, the pharmacy is conveniently located under the Shortland building, a short walk from Auchmuty Library. In-store services include prescriptions, ear/nose piercings, vaccinations including COVID, Flu/Whooping Cough, and MMR, first aid, blood pressure, and glucose checks, NDSS (subsidised supplies for diabetics), and FREE COVID-19 Tests (RATs) for concession card holders. A variety of giftware, beauty products, and other essential items are also available for purchase in-store and online. Callaghan Campus Pharmacy not only offers cheap, student prices and price matching with other pharmacies, but Afterpay is available and parents or guardians can pay for products/services in advance for students.

Embracing a modern approach, Callaghan Pharmacy offers free delivery on campus for all prescription orders, including Student Living Precinct (pick up from West Tower). Deliveries will be made between 12 pm-5 pm on weekdays, other times may be available by request. Check out their online system at www.ccpharmacy.com.au for booking appointments, setting prescription reminders, uploading a script, and arranging pick-up or delivery.

In 2017 they expanded to be a Collaborative Care Pharmacy, opening a new location within the Broadmeadow Medical Centre. Working closely with bulk billing doctors, the Broadmeadow pharmacy is open seven days a week until 9 pm. Providing access to free after-hours services, even for international students, was momentous in the continued efforts of boosting access to healthcare for the campus community.

Stuart is passionate about ensuring the best health outcome for every individual is achieved. He is a qualified herbalist, offering advice and medical reviews for both prescription and non-prescription remedies.

Going beyond the boundaries of a traditional pharmacy, Callaghan Campus Pharmacy offers unmatched services catering to those studying, residing, or working on campus at the University of Newcastle. Pop in for a chat, check out the online store, or arrange for your scripts to be delivered to you!
