Sports Medal

Preparation is underway to celebrate UON’s best athletes and their achievements, Daneie Geddes writes.

Students and staff alike are getting ready to applaud the remarkable accomplishments of athletes, coaches, teams, and individuals within the University of Newcastle’s vibrant sports community, as the highly anticipated 2023 Sports Awards draw near.

Hosted collaboratively by NUsport and the University, the Sports Awards serve as a platform to recognise exceptional sporting feats across diverse categories.

These include sporting scholarships, University Blues, University Colours, Sports Club of the Year, Team of the Year, and the coveted Sports Person of the Year award.

The event carries profound historical significance, continuing to celebrate the unwavering dedication and commitment of student athletes to balance their academic and sporting endeavours.

The awards not only pay homage to the Uni’s storied sporting legacy but also shine a light on NUsport’s commitment to nurturing talent and cultivating a culture of sporting excellence.

NUsport Director of Venues Sally Hinchey says the awards night celebrates sports endeavours and the dedication it takes to balance them alongside pursuing university studies.

“An incredible opportunity for students to actively engage, displaying solidarity, and commemorating the triumphs of their fellow peers,” she said.

Evidenced by the remarkable achievements of students on global stages such as the Olympics, Commonwealth Games, and World University Games, Newcastle students really are punching above their weight.

More than just a celebration of medals and titles, the Sports Awards honour the qualities of character and determination that underpin these victories. The evening serves to inspire current and future athletes toward the continued pursuit of excellence.
