NUspace is set to close for six months, allowing workers to install more student amenities and fix a leaking roof, and students inside are being directed to move to Callaghan from week 8, write the Yak team.
With a leaking roof, lack of amenities and aging furniture, NUspace will close at the end of week 7 for six months, with plans for more common kitchens, social spaces and a reconstructed level nine.
The much-maligned NUspace roof has been known to create slippery floors and fail in intense rainfall, and management has its sights set on fixing it.

Closure a logistical nightmare
In an exclusive statement to Yak Media the University said it understood the frustration and confusion being caused to students.
“We are making all necessary arrangements to make this transition as smooth as possible for our students,” it reads.
“Moving logistics will be provided for any students undertaking major projects, and extra shuttle services will be provided to Callaghan while upgrades are underway.”
“Temporary overflow parking will be implemented on the No. 1 oval at student accommodation. We are informing neighbouring residents of the changes and are asking them to keep kerbs free for student parking,” the University said.
It’s not clear whether level nine will become a rooftop bar or a satellite restaurant of Local Connections. It’s understood the restricted access level is currently being used for storage and services.
A Visual Communication student (who wished not to be identified) has vented her outrage after discovering she will join students at Callaghan in the race for limited car parks.
“This is crazy! how are we going to move in with everybody else? I hate Callaghan and it’s so full of mozzies,” she said.
“I’m only at the start of my degree and I’ve just found my friends, and I’m going to have to start all over again,” she said.
Hunter building to reopen

Hunter Building, currently closed
Word on the street says the Hunter building is being hastily cleared of asbestos to house students once again, however this has not yet been confirmed by the University.
An anonymous student contacted Yak Media claiming they saw library staff with trolleys of full books moving them back in.
Students living in nearby accommodation would certainly appreciate the re-opening of the Huxley Library and Boost Juice.
Closure not necessary, say students
Business and management student Samuel Johnson-Rickards likened the move to “building the thirteen story treehouse.”
“We don’t have time to wait for Andy Griffiths and his motley crew to reconstruct a perfectly good building,” he said.
“Can we have funding spent on things that actually matter, like better food options for students at Callaghan?”
A satirical cartoon of NUspace in 2030 is being circulated on social media.
