Chivalry is not dead? – The medieval festivals craze

Newcastle has opened its doors to Medieval and Renaissance Festivals, featuring live music, historical re-enactments, and artisanal crafts. But why the interest? Yak writer Ezra Platt takes a look at the trend.

There seems to be a craze over Medieval-era festivals, transporting participants to another era.

A medieval faire is an annual open-air gathering, a tradition in practice since the seventh Century, where participants dress and speak as people from a bygone era. Over the years, these gatherings have grown to become massive festivals drawing in more than 200,000 guests each year.

The next medieval faire in Newcastle will be held in Honeysuckle. The event promises to be a unique blend of fantasy and history. Attendees will also have the opportunity to greet our very own UON Medieval Society, so I suggest not missing out on the chance to immerse yourself in a world of knights, castles and magic!

Merchants from all over gather to sell or buy products, such as Midgard Designs, offering a range of Viking, Saxon, Frankish, and other period-based accessories and jewellery.

Earlier this year, Bernie’s Bar hosted the inaugural Newcastle Ren Faire. This event, much like other medieval faires, drew fantasy enthusiasts and fairies from far and wide, infusing the laneway of King Street with a touch of enchantment.

From musical performances to elaborate costumes and handcrafted treasures, the festival brought enthusiasts and locals together. These festivals are places where you can truly be yourself without any inhibitions and where interests and passions are celebrated.

“Ren Faires bring a sense of magic to everyday life. I can’t wait for the next one!,” said an attendee.

Having never experienced a Renaissance Faire before, attendee Kellie anticipated a lively gathering of communities.

“It was a delightful sight to witness their collective effort in bringing something unique and enjoyable to the locals,” she said.

She described the Ren Faire at Bernie’s as a thrilling introduction to the mystical and medieval world. The highlight of the event, the medieval combat training, was a spectacle to behold. It featured the history group of the College of Saint Crispin, the formidable Ravenguard, and even our very own UON Medieval Society, all showcasing their skills in a live jist.

“I believe the world needs more Ren and Medieval Faires!” Kellie said.

This sentiment echoed the excitement and anticipation of many attendees, eagerly awaiting the next one at the end of August. With the potential for significant growth and a surge in participation, the future of these Faires in our city looks promising.

So, expect more medieval costumes getting around on local streets.
