In a stunning and unexpected turn of events, the University of Newcastle has decided to abandon its planned trimester model for 2026 and beyond.
Bowing to increased pressure from student groups and external lobbying, the University will formally scrap the trimester model for undergraduate programs with an announcement coming from the Vice Chancellors Office, expected later today. The decision comes after an extensive consultation period include vocal advocacy by students opposed to the change. Citing increased study pressures, impact from the cost of living and growing concerns over student study/life balance and their mental health; the decision to renege on the proposal will be a much-welcomed relief to students across all disciplines.
Dave, an engineering student, told Yak that the decision to abandon the trimester model was “a good move”, and that “hopefully, the university adopts a unimester model instead.”
