Local Poets Unite at the Pocketbook Society

Newcastle’s creative scene is bustling with incredible artists, writers, and filmmakers, all excited to publicly showcase their work to eager audiences. Facilitating the vibrant creative scene is a series of organisations bringing creatives together. One group in particular is the newly formed Pocketbook Poetry Society. Yak Staff Writer Tianna Rotunno takes a look at the new kid on the block.
What is it?
Pocketbook is a local poetry society hosting monthly open mic nights. The new group has burst onto the creative scene, drawing an excited audience each month. Their next catch-up in April will be their third meeting with responses from the audience and poets alike, exceeding expectations. The society is looking for more artistic souls to join in the fun and build their already growing membership base. Whether you want to gather for drinks and listen to some great poetry or if you’re feeling brave enough, reciting your poetry will make for a great night out with friends! Hosting 10 speakers per night, you can choose to use the mic or use the power of your voice to encapsulate and transport audiences on a shared journey.
For everyone who prefers writing over performing, Pocketbook has something for you, too. Pocketbook is talking about hosting writing workshops and other creative events and collaborative projects – keep an eye out for these!
Pocketbook events provide a fun, casual setting with supportive people to foster your creativity.
Who is it for?
EVERYONE! So far, the society consists of a few resident stand-up poets, including some PhD Candidates at the University Of Newcastle. You can see and perform finished pieces or work in progress. Being a community-run society, participants come from all walks of life, from aspiring poets to poetry veterans. Pocketbook’s founder Amber Wilkes has created a platform for creativity, hosting a diverse range of writers including rap, comedy poetry, short stories, and including queer poetry in the lineup every week.
Where and when?
On the 1st Wednesday of every month, head over to Good Brother Espresso at 40 King St, Newcastle. Settle in for a 1-hour session beginning at 7 pm. No need to register for the event, simply come along and meet some new people.
Why should I come along?
Since Pocketbook is a community-run society, there are many benefits to coming along and having a go. You get to meet all kinds of people with the same interest in poetry as you. There is no need to participate, you can hang out just to listen and support fellow poetry-lovers. And the best part, open mic nights are totally free!
How do I get more info?
You can head over to their Instagram page @pocketbookpoetsociety to see event announcements, pics from open mic nights, and to contact them with any questions. We’d love to see you come along on an open mic night and introduce yourself!
