Tim Burton – Talks directing in new Wednesday series

There is a new Wednesday in town!

Netflix’s “Wednesday” follows the Addams family after Wednesday is expelled from her regular school and sent to Nevermore Academy, a school designed for outcasts. This second season will be released in two parts, with the second premiering on September 3rd.

Our staff writer, Ezra Platt, was  fortunate to be invited to Wednesday Island this past weekend and can share some details below.

Sydney’s iconic landmark, Cockatoo Island, underwent a makeover last week as Netflix stars took over, illuminating the night with black and purple lights as the island became Nevermore.

As we boarded the Netflix Wednesday themed boat, that was decorated with purple curtains and fog machines, we were greeted with some Nevermore students, and a special rendition of Addam’s Family hit songs from a band of violins and a cello.

Upon stepping onto the island, we were welcomed by the sounds of the Hyde. Making our way through the underground tunnel, it felt chilling, as though something was ready to jump out at us at any moment. On the other side, the eagle pyre awaited us for the new year at Nevermore on the purple carpet, where I caught a brief glimpse of Jenna before she parted to the assembly panel.

Entering the building, we were stepping into Wednesday and Enid’s room, (SPOILERS?) her stalkers room, and the creepy dollhouse from the first episode. They even handed out blood bags, which I oddly enjoy – just me giving off outcast energy.

After we all gathered in the assembly for a spectacular (or grueling in the words of Wednesday) talent show from the outcast drama students and a spooky panel with the actors, writers and director Tim Burton. We also had a surprise appearance from the beautiful Gwendoline Christie, which was a hint into what is to come in the next part of the series.

For the film students, one thing that stood out was when the aspiring film creators question was brought up with Tim, who at first jokingly told everyone to get out while they could, before continuing on to explain that it’s mostly about what you have in your heart and what is meaningful to you.

He encouraged the creative side of people, and told them to try and not takes things too personally, and to keep putting their own touches into their work, and to pursue what they truly want to do, despite whatever the world or the internet says.
