Pot of gold at the falls

The location of the Mid North Coast’s pot of gold is revealed, writes Jamie Jeffery.
If there really is a pot of gold at the end of every rainbow, Potoroo Falls would be worth more than its weight.
Located high in the mountains of the Mid North Coast, this utopia is an ideal travel location for a great day out with family or friends.
For Port Macquarie students, it is the perfect day trip location, with just a two hour drive from the centre of town.
These falls contain water that is always incredibly cold, even on the warmest of days, a refreshing addition to the flawlessness of the place.
It is advised to get your hands on a more adventurous vehicle like a 4WD since the drive towards the falls is very rocky and has a lot of steep hills, but most cars can cope with the drive.
These falls contain water that is always incredibly cold, even on the warmest of days, a refreshing addition to the flawlessness of the place. There is also a number of places that you can jump off. The higher spots top about 15 metres above the water’s surface, which are reserved for the more daring attendees.
For those who aren’t used to going bush, here are my essential tips to getting a great and safe experience out of this place:
- Sunscreen and insect repellent
The mozzies out there are incredible, especially on humid days. You’ll need sun protection as well because you will never want to leave this place. - Enclosed shoes
The trail towards the falls can get fairly bushy, with all sorts of creepy crawlies out and about. It’s best to avoid any injuries from slips, so wear sturdy walking shoes. - Don’t be a hero
There are some very high places to jump off. If you aren’t confident in jumping into water, don’t do it due to peer pressure. It does hurt if you don’t do it right. - Leave nothing but footprints
This place is utterly beautiful, we need to keep it that way. If you bring any food up to the falls, make sure you clean it up.
All in all, it is a great travel destination for anyone who is looking for a day of adventure. There is a picnic area close by where you can eat lunch and laze around. It is a definite must see if you’re in the Mid North Coast area.
