The Appointments

Get ready to feast your ears with sweet tunes and your stomach with a beer this month. Zara Handscomb has all the details so you can catch what’s on in and around uni this month.

It’s been a hard time for all artists over the last few months (years), make sure to set aside some time to go out and support local acts this month.

Vice Chancellor’s Welcome & 2022 Commencement Address

Where: Derkenne Courtyard, Shortland Building.

When: Wednesday 2nd March, 10.30 am till 12 pm.

Meet your Vice-Chancellor Professor Alex Zelinsky AO as he welcomes you to the University of Newcastle for 2022 with a commencement address outlining his vision for your student journey.

Hot on the Heels of their Latest Video Release “June”, 2021 UoN Band Comp Winners SlapJack will be playing at the Vice-Chancellor’s Welcome in the Derkenne Courtyard. Catch them playing at 10.30 am.

Stick around for a Q&A with the VC plus coffee vouchers, FREE cold drinks and doughnuts (GF).

Everyone who attends is invited to head to Park on the Hill for BBQ and gelato courtesy of UNSA – University of Newcastle Students’ Association.

At 11.30am you can Catch M.E.N (the band) at Park on the Hill.

M.E.N is a new all-female supergroup combining the talents of singer-songwriters Maeve Grant , Ella Day & Nina Samson.


For lovers of Musicals UoN Musos Club Presents “The Trail To Oregon”

Where: Cas Theatre, Hamilton.

When: 4th to 13th March – Fri & Sat 7 pm and Sun 2 pm.

The newest club on campus are bringing you an interactive musical! Where you get to choose the character’s names and fate! Check out the details on Instagram.

International Women’s Day Fair

Where: Park on the Hill.

When: 8th March, 11.30 am – 1.30 pm

Come and listen to tunes, enjoy the BBQ, listen to speakers and stroll the stalls.

When: 8th March, 6 pm

Celebrating talented female, non-binary and gender diverse UoN Students and Alumni musicians.

International Women’s day Poetry Salon

Where: Lass O’Gowrie Hotel

When: 8th March, 6-9 pm

Come and listen to, or bring along your favourite poems by women and non-binary poets to share. It can be from any time period and any background you please.

Hot Potato Band and SlapJack

Where: Warners Bay Theatre

When: 10th March, 6.30pm – 10.00pm

Newcastle Funk legends Slapjack are supporting Sydney’s brass collective Hot Potato. Seats are limited, don’t miss out!

Fungas & Dust

Where: Lass O’Gowrie Hotel
When: 11th March
Newy Psych Rock band Fungas, are going on a tour in March. ‘Termination 99’ will be kicking off at the Lass alongside Dust.

When: 12th March

This that is returning to Newcastle’s foreshore, with a lineup including Craterface, Teen Jesus and the Jean Teasers, Dust, WAAX and more. Last release tickets are still available!



Cormac Grant X Red Revel

Where: The Stag and Hunter Hotel

When: 12th March, 7 pm

Supported with friends Cormac Grant takes to the Stag stage with  Manuel Rohrl on bass, Gabe Argiris on drums, Georgie Winchester on vocals and keys.

Newcastle Fringe Festival

Where: Various locations around Newcastle 

When: 17th – 27th March 

Celebrating absolutely anything creative, Newcastle Fringe offers a range of different events and performances over 10 days. Check out the website for details about the artists performing and when you can see them.



LachlanX.Morris “Rocky Road” Single Launch

Where: The Stag and Hunter Hotel

When: 18th March, 7 pm 

Coming to the stage is Lachlan X. Morris with “Rocky Road” single launch. Supported by Lilli Crane Band.

Stomping Ground

Where: The Lock Up

When: 18th March, 6.30 pm

The Y are back to start their series ‘Stomping Ground’. A line up featuring, Hand Models, Fungas, Liquid Zoo and RagDoll.  . This is an ALL AGES, SAFE SPACE event.

Family BandAid Festival#2

Where: The Family Hotel 

When: 19th March, 2 pm – Midnight

The Family Hotel are bringing you a festival featuring Inimata, e4444e, Elijah Amos, Soy Boy, Juanita Porteiro and More. Two stages, one big night.

$25 entry, cash only.

Make sure you don’t miss a showcase of the best DJ’s at UoN. The winner will get a paid headline set at the Festival of Autonomy Party, plus a press pack (including photos, & a logo). All finalists will get paid gigs at UoN events and parties, all other participants put themselves out there for potential opportunities throughout 2022.
