NAIDOC week’s Cheap Chewsday: An Aussie Food Feast

To mark the 2019 NAIDOC week celebrations, the mob from UON’s Wollotuka Institute hosted this month’s Cheap Chewsday. Leanne Elliott ‘dishes’ on how the night went.

Guests walking into the hall were met with aromas that made the mouth water. Lemon Myrtle and fresh damper still in the oven, mixed with a strong hearty stew smell.

The evening commenced with a welcome to country and an Indigenous dance performed by the Millabah dance group. This was followed by a brief introduction touching on Indigenous traditions and culture.

After the light entertainment, the 120 or more guests were treated to a delicious feast of:

  • Traditional damper,
  • Kangaroo stew,
  • Grilled crocodile with lime sauce,
  • Macadamia pesto pasta,
  • Winter salad with seasoned roasted winter veggies,
  • Lemon Myrtle tea and
  • Sweet damper with whipped cream, honey or jam.

The food looked as good as it tasted, with many of the guests saying, “it was some of the best food they had ever tasted.” And there were lots of satisfied, happy faces by the end of the evening.

Cheap Chewsday is a monthly dinner hosted by the Jesmond Park Uniting Church, as a way to welcome UON’s International Students.

Each month highlights cuisines from various parts of the world and it is a great way to meet new people and taste different foods. To find out more about Cheap Chewsday or to be added to the contact list visit international/while-you-are-here/get-involved/cheap-chewsday
